Summer Fun—Day 68: Go Rock Climbing Indoors

Indoor rock climbing centers offer fun and exercise, even on rainy days.

Climbing builds strength, confidence and trust and is a great family activity. Here are a few rock climbing locations in the Baltimore/Annapolis area that are open to the public.

Earth Treks' Climbing Centers are indoor climbing gyms located in Columbia, Timonium and Rockville. Each climbing gym is among the largest in the country, with plenty of climbing for every ability level. Friday Night Rox is open to kids ages 6-12 from 6:30-9 p.m. for $29 ($19 for members). Kids can stay climb and play games while their parents have a date night. There are also Open Climbs for ages 5 and older on the weekends from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. They cost $25 for three sessions.

The Center offers a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities for the entire family including a rock climbing wall that any child over the age of 5 may use. Drop in fee for those outside city is $10, city residents $8; kids ages 6-16 cost $7 for those outside the city and $6 for city residents. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Terrapin adventures

The Terrapin Tower offers a two-sided outside climbing wall that ranges from easy to difficult. The tower also has cargo nets, tires and logs to climb on and is open daily for recreation. Cost is $35 per person for 2 hours. There are age, height, weight restrictions: climbers need to be a minimum of 8 years old, 60 pounds and 4 feet tall. Drop ins are welcome but it's best to make a reservation.
